Kristen and Her Family left their campsite for a hike. The hiked 5 miles west and 2 miles north. How far were they from the campsite?

    picture it as a triangle. it might help if you draw it out.
    5 and 2 are your sides, and the distance from the campsite is the hypotenuse of your triangle.
    if you apply the pythagorean theorem, that turns out to be
    5^2 + 2^2 = C^2
    25 + 4 = 29
    the answer = the square root of 29.

    5 squared= 25
    2 squared = 4
    25+4=29
    Square root of 29 equals 5.38
    They are 5.38 miles from their campsite

    think of this as a triangle. the horizontal leg is the 5 miles traveled west. the vertical leg is the 2 miles north. You want to find the hypotenuse (the longest slanted leg across from the right angle) and that is how far from the campsite she is.
    the up carrot ^ represents an exponent

    5^2+2^2=c^2
    25+4=c^2
    29=c^2 c=the square root of 29, which is 5.38516481.

    the family is about 5.39 miles away from the campsite :) hope that helped

    this one is simple just fill it in
    a=5
    b=2
    5^2+2^2=c^2
    25+4=c^2
    29=c^2 now Square root each side
    5.39=c this answer is rounded to the nearested tenth
